Abstract

TECHNOLOGICAL TRENDS IN DATA COMMUNICATIONS ARE INFLUENCING THE NUMBER OF PRINTERS USED AS HARD-COPY TERMINALS, CREATING NEW REQUIREMENTS FOR COMMUNICATIONS LINE COMPATIBILITY, AND AS PRINTERS MOVE INTO THE OFFICE, QUIET OPERATION. MINICOMPUTER APPLICATIONS LIKE DATA ENTRY, WORD PROCESSING, AND BUSINESS DATA PROCESSING REQUIRE HIGHER SPEED PRINTERS. EVEN THE TRADITIONAL DATA PROCESSING TASKS, SUCH AS THE MASS PRODUCTION OF REPORTS AND STATEMENT REQUIRE FASTER, MORE RELIABLE, MORE EASILY MAINTAINED PRINTERS. COMPUTERS ARE BEING USED MORE, AND MUCH OF THE ADDED WORK FINDS ITS WAY TO THE PRINTER. THE EMPHASIS, THEN, IS TOWARD IMPROVING SPEED WITHOUT RISKING PERFORMANCE AND RELIABILITY. USE OF SOPHISTICATED INTEGRATED ELECTRONICS AND IMPROVED MECHANICAL CONFIGUATIONS HAVE IMPROVED PRINTER RELIABILITY, PROVIDING LONGER MEAN TIME BETWEEN FAILURES AND LOWER MEAN TIME TO REPAIR.
