American Libraries received photographs from more than 65 libraries over the past year, from the Florida Keys to the California coast, along with accounts of their restorations, transformations, and new spaces and additions. This year's facilities showcase features 18 recent projects including the University of Utah Marriott Library's $34-million underground addition (above), where skylights bring the heavens into the building, and the children's room (right) at the revitalized Multnomah County Central Library in Portland, Oregon (this month's cover).
Above, the new $11.7-million Boston College Law School library's Daniel R. Coquillette Rare Books Room showcases a rose marble mantelpiece-once in the White House-given to the college during the Truman administration. Architect Earl R. Flansburgh & Associates finished the exterior (inset) with brick, limestone, and granite consistent with the neighborhood context.
Right, the 9,200-squarefoot Children's Learning Center dominates the first floor of the new Main Library addition to
the Public Library of Cincinnati and Hamilton County, Ohio. Twentytwo new computers are available, many loaded with over 100 CD-ROM programs serving preschoolers to sixth graders. The center offers areas to meet different needs, such as an enclosed children's reading garden. Design architects: Shepley Bulfinch Richardson and Abbott of Boston.
