* Widening the Horizon: Exoticism and Post-War Popular Music. By Philip Hayward. Indiana University Press (601 North Morton Street, Bloomington, IN 47404-3707; 800-842-6796), 1999. 208 pp. Music examples, bibliography, index. Paperback, $19.95. The style known as Exotica was developed in the 1950s and 1960s and is exemplified in works by Les Baxer, Martin Denny, Arthur Lyman and others; today, exotic themes can be found in many world music fusion productions and in what the author terms the "Yanni phenomenon." In this historical overview, Philip Hayward helps readers understand the evolution of the exotic style in American music and how the American presence in the Pacific during World War II altered some aspects of American popular musical taste.
