The problem? Accurate delivery of OC at longer ranges, like 20 feet. Pepper spray from a belt carried canister cannot do that. Not a cone pattern. Not a stream. Not foam. These three options may also suffer from the problems of wind drift. The solution? The Kimber Jet Protector® JPX. This less-lethal device accurately fires 1/3 ounce of either OC or PAVA out to ranges of 20 feet with excellent accuracy. The OC is a 10% solution. A practice cartridge filled with blue food coloring is available for training purposes.
Note that the Jet Protector JPX is cartridge fired. It uses a center-fire primer to propel the liquid down the barrel and through the carefully contoured nozzles. The use of a center-fire primer probably classifies this device as a firearm. That alone may affect where on the use-of-force continuum (or toolbox of options) the device is placed. Check the exact language in your use-of-force policy.
The Jet Protector is about the same size as a Glock 27. A nylon holster with an integral extra magazine carrier is available from Kimber. This holster can be carried on the duty belt or in a drop-down holster. Actually, the Jet Protector has a lot in common with the Glock. The Jet Protector uses a long, double-action-only trigger pull and is striker-fired. The striker is auto-switching. Pull of the trigger fires one barrel, while a second pull fires the other barrel. These do not need to be sequenced. The Jet Protector fires two cartridges per reload, and the striker alternates with each pull. The trigger pull on the device we tested measured 7 pounds. It was long and progressive but predictable.
After the second shot, the reload time is relatively fast, about as fast as a magazine change on the duty pistol. Depress the mag release, let the mag fall free, which it readily does, grab the new mag and slide it into place. The mag release is ambidextrous and easily operated. It takes about 4 seconds, depending on where you are carrying the spare mag. The Jet Protector magazine (barrel, liquid canisters and primer) is NON-reloadable and NON-refillable. Extra magazine-barrel assemblies filled with OC run about $43, while those filled with blue dye cost $39 each.
