Abstract
The focus of my research is to explore the benefits of teaching students with and without learning disabilities using hands-on learning vs. traditional lecture for math. I looked at the ways in which students used manipulatives while the educator instructed the class on new math materials. I also observed students receiving the same math lesson without using math manipulatives. The study took place in a first grade class where numerous math lessons were given by educators. Through careful examination of data samples, observations, data collection and analysis, we will be able to see if using math manipulatives are effective compared to traditional lecture. This study was completed using data collected through quantitative and qualitative methods. Research has shown the importance, relevance, and necessity of reaching all learners by using math manipulatives when teaching math concepts.
