Over five million passengers traveled through Washington Dulles Interional Airport during 1985 -- an increase of nearly 50 percent over the previous year, and commercial flights increased 47.5 percent for that time period, according to the Washington Dulles Task Force (WDTF).
"Dulles has surpassed all growth projections," said Thomas G. Morr, President of the WDTF. "The pace of the airport's growth is accelerating," said Morr. "Twice as many passengers used Washington Dulles in December 1985, when compared to December 1984."
According to the latest statistics prepared by the Federal Aviation Administration, 5.08 million commercial air passengers used the airport during 1985, representing a 49 percent increase over that same time period last year. Total passengers, including general aviation, exceeded 5.2 million. During 1984, commercial passengers reached 3.40 million and total passengers, 3.56 million.
Domestic passenger traffic grew by over 56 percent, while international travel was up 77 percent for the year. Dulles' international traffic grew from 363,171 to 642,688 in 1985.
A chronological look at 1985 indicates that activity at the airport grew throughout the year. Expansions of service or facilities occurred virtually every month.
