A federal court order halting the sale and production of a 321 Studios product has left more questions than answers in its wake.
Retailers and consumers are among those confused in the wake of Judge Susan Illston's ruling, which orders 321 Studios to stop "manufacturing, distributing or otherwise trafficking in any type of DVD circumvention software."
But the order did not offer any guidance for retailers, who were uncertain how to handle the matter.
Circuit City sells 321's DVD X-Copy Gold suite, and a spokeswoman said the members of the company's legal and merchandising departments had met to discuss the ruling, but no decision had been made by press time other than that the company was "still monitoring the situation" and planned to decide by Feb. 27 whether to remove the product from shelves.
Spokespersons for Best Buy, which sells several levels of the X-Copy suite - including the Platinum and game copying suite did not return calls by press time. But a sales associate at a Costa Mesa, Calif., store was unaware of the decision when a customer approached and asked about it.
