Rep. Richard Baker, R., La., says there is a consensus that Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac need a strong bank-like regulator.
Rep. Baker, after concluding a four-hour roundtable discussion, told the 28 participants last Tuesday that Congress needs a strong regulator who can independently verify that the government sponsored enterprises are operating in a safe and sound manner.
"A regulator like the Comptroller of the Currency would be an enormous step in that direction," Rep. Baker said.
