Tom Dowling figures he got a late start in investing, since he didn't start building his portfolio until after he earned his MBA. But he's been making up for it with a vengeance.
Mr. Dowling has worked for advertising/public relations firm BursonMarsteller for 14 years and is general manager of its Downtown office. He looks for conservative investment vehicles that will pay off in the long-term and aggressively pursues them.
"For example," he said, "I have completely maxed out on my 401(k), contributing at the highest level possible."
He still owns the savings bonds he purchased in 1988, around the time he started in the communications field. And he lists his stock options among his largest holdings.
Burson has been owned by WPP Group since the late 1990s.
"Stock options were instituted shortly after WPP took over and were made available to all," Mr. Dowling said, adding that sometimes options are offered as additional perks.
