Abstract

Furthermore, stigma leads to discrimination in the provision of services for physical illness in those who are mentally ill,1 and to low use of diagnostic procedures when they have physical illness.2 Stigma of mental illness can be defined asthe negative attitude (based on prejudice and misinformation) that is triggered by a marker of illness- eg, odd behaviour or mention of psychiatric treatment in a person's curriculum vitae.
