Abstract
According to WHO, suicide mortality in Finland is one of the highest in the world: 28 per 100 000 in 1992. In Finland 80% of suicides are committed by men. The suicide rate for men has risen since the 1950s and is the second highest in Europe (47 per 100 000 in 1992), while the rate for women places them fifth in order. Rapid urbanisation, alcohol abuse, and fragmentation of communities have been identified as some of the causes of the high rates.
