UK independent StrataGas is advancing with its push to develop coal-bed methane as a gas resource in the UK, as it and other firms seek to replicate the success of the CBM industry in the US.
StrataGas has signed an agreement with US Coastal Oil and Gas to take over a license in South Wales, known as PEDL (Petroleum Exploration and Development License) 100.
The 57,000-acre onshore area, located between Port Talbot and Bridgend, already has planning permission for five CBM wells. StrataGas expects formal assignment of the license to be completed shortly, and says it will later make further announcements on the progress of planning, drilling, and testing.
The overall area has potential CBM gas resources of 150 billion cubic feet (4.25 billion cubic meters) or more, says StrataGas. Remaining coal in this part of South Wales has a relatively high gas content, and is thought to have adequate...
