Abstract

The South Africa Medical and Dental Council (SAMDC) ignored calls to arraign the two doctors. [Frances Ames], with the help of colleagues, raised money and applied for a Supreme Court injunction to force them to do so. It was a long struggle, but she won. In 1985 Tucker was struck off the register; Lang was reprimanded and cautioned. Ames was awarded costs and used the money to set up medical ethical committees in Cape Town and Wits Universities. In the late 1980s Ames counselled many people detained without trial. When a detainee, Simpiwe Mtinkulu, died shortly after his release from prison, she showed that he had been poisoned with thallium.
