Abstract

Although the "Tax Cuts and Jobs Act," which was signed into law by President Trump on Dec 22, 2017, dramatically changed the tax landscape, the changes are not effective until Jan 1, 2018 and do not affect completion of your 2017 tax return. Form 1040's due date is Apr 17, 2018 because April 15 is a Sunday and the Emancipation Day holiday in the District of Columbia is observed on April 16 even if taxpayers do not live in the District of Columbia. The IRS has released updated income tax withholding tables that reflect changes made by the tax legislation enacted in late 2017. A new verification code box will appear on Form W-2, but not all W-2s will have a 16-digit code in box 9. If taxpayers e-file and their W-2 has a verification code in box 9, they should enter it when prompted by their tax software.
