If delays, internal squabbles, widely expressed doubts and competition -- politely likened to a dogfight -- are bothering Dave Dove, he's not showing it.
Dove, the self-styled "little guy" phone book publisher and president of the Las Vegas Yellow Pages Discount Directories Inc., says that as of January 26 his company was "days away" from ending its compilation of a 600-page phone book. If and when it gets published, it will be the first to rival Centel's 1259-page book that arrived in January.
The former Phoenix phone book ad salesman says Las Vegas has room for more than two books. "The market is so big, you don't have to be number one, number two or even number three to do well," he says.
He puts the market at between $40 and $50 million, figures disputed by the phone company, whose business manager, Nield Montgomery says, "I would like to see it grow to be that much."
