On July 25 INS Tekuma, the last of three Dolphin class submarines built in Germany, was handed over to the Israeli Navy. Israel had initially ordered two boats of this type and later increased the number to three.
The Dolphin class is a new type of state-of-- the-art conventional diesel-electric submarines, especially designed for the Israeli Navy. They were built jointly by Howaldtswerke-- Deutsche Werft AG (HDW), Kiel and Thyssen Nordseewerke (TNSW), Emden, with HDW being the main contractor.
