THEY TRIED IT WITH PAGEMAKER, BUT THE PUBLISHING WORLD WAS STILL unconvinced. Now InDesign, a new software package from Adobe Systems, may be enough to loosen Quark's market dominance.
Adobe's Photoshop and Illustrator are already design essentials, but Quark Xpress has been the industry's application of choice for page design. Enter InDesign, originally dubbed K2 - or the `Quark killer'.
While InDesign closely resembles its Adobe brethren, what sets it apart from Quark Xpress is that it is based on an open architecture, meaning developers can tailor the program to customers' needs. Third-party developers (more than 200 are expected to release add-on solutions) and systems integrators can deliver customised programs for magazines, advertising agencies, retailers, design studios and newspapers, rather than rely solely on the basic product. Baseview, Digital Technology and Systems Integrators of the US have all announced plans to create newspaper systems based on InDesign, which could eventually threaten Quark's dominance...
