When I first took delivery of the new JVC Streamcorder GY-DV300U, my first thought was "Okay, here is 'another' camcorder that will probably be like most of the other offerings in this price range." Well, this editor was pleasantly surprised in all but a few categories.
First, let's talk technical performance. Picture quality was superb in all categories with little to no smearing. The internal stabilizer worked great. I really put the image stabilizer to the test by running through the streets of Providence, R.I. to capture images of the season's first Waterfire event. In addition to the stable image, the camera worked well in what I would consider fairly low-light situations.
The tape transport was rock solid and there was no evidence of any tape problems on playback. Both the color viewfinder and the LCD panel provided crisp images that made manual focus a breeze.
