Abstract

Moving from clinical practice to management is a big step for many physicians. Some worry they'll miss the daily interaction with patients and the gratification that comes from healing. But obviously there's something about being a physician executive that continues to draw bright, highly motivated people. A handful of physician executives were asked about what they love most about their jobs. Chal Nunn, MD, SVP & chief medical officer at Centra Health, discovered that there was a science to managing people, which fascinated him. Suzana K. Makowski, MD, junior faculty member, UMass Memorial Medical Center, has learned to work closely with people from different departments. She said she loves working with people from different disciplines and bridging that gap. Michael Goler, MD, SVP of Cleveland County Health Care System, said the best part of his job is creating new systems that will ensure more effective care for thousands of people.
