REVIEW: Author Albert Ellis has long been considered the grandfather of cognitive behavioral therapies. In this text, he details the major theories of personality throughout the history of the field, and presents his own theory of personality, based on Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT), alongside that of other theorists. Also covered are religious, New Age, and non-Western approaches to personality. Looking at recent empirical evidence that supports and/or contradicts each personality theory, Ellis provides more critical analysis of theory than is typically found in most textbooks. This approach is intended to help students develop the scientific thinking required to evaluate current and forthcoming theories. A glossary is included. The text is appropriate for senior undergraduates and graduate students in psychology, counseling, and social work. The authors are affiliated with the Albert Ellis Institute.
