Based out of Oakland, Calif., Steve Gillman and Katherine Keefer have been working collaboratively as a team for a number of years. They choose to use natural materials like granite, bronze, concrete and steel in their work. Their designs are strongly influenced by the history and geography of each site.
"It was the water and the piers and the orphan-ness of the site" that attracted Steve Gillman and Katherine Keefer to the pylon section of the Yonkers waterfront.
"It harkened back to an unsullied time," he said wistfully. "We couldn't resist that site because they actually left some of the old stuff. Everything else all around the pylons is new."
The site is located farther south along the waterfront between the sculpture garden and the amphitheater where old, weathered pylons still jut up from the river.
