The essential message of this collection of essays is that, a century after W.E.B. Du Bois's famous statement that "the problem of the twentieth century is the problem of the color line", race still matters. The chapters in this volume demonstrate that race still matters in housing, employment, upward mobility, occupational mobility, and social support networks. An important sub-theme of this volume is that race is America is not just a black-and-white issue. As scholars of race our work needs to incorporate a multiracial perspective in our analysis of race in America.
