If the players in the intermediary channel have learnt anything from the relentless march of technology over the past quarter century, then upgrade must have been one of the hardest lessons to accept. Buy a suite of office furniture including desks and filing racks, and you could be pretty certain it would be a long time before you had to think of change. But computer hardware and software progresses so quickly that short-term obsolescence is an everyday fact of life.
This acceleration hits the software house just as much as its users, particularly on the research & development front. CDL general manager Rick Slater told me in a recent chat that they now have a 115-strong R&D team evenly split between application and insurer product development, with the latter working with individual intermediaries such as BDML Connect, Devitt, HSBC and Marsh, to name but a few.
