Japan has long been known for its thrifty, credit-averse consumers. But there are recent signs that the Japanese are beginning to take to credit cards.
Roughly 62 million Visa-- branded credit cards were circulating in Japan at the end of 1997, a 9% increase from 1996, Visa International reports. And Japan is MasterCard International's third-largest market in the Asia-Pacific region, following China and South Korea.
