New benchmarks that ADMR readers can use to evaluate the processing efficiency of their companies' A/P staffs are available in the justpublished IOMA's A/P Department Benchmarks and Analysis 2003. Based on practices in roughly 500 AT departments, this study provides useful benchmarks for such basic management and operational categories in AT as duplicate payments and check fraud, costs and efficiency, error rates and detection, procedures, automation, and staff productivity.
Illustrating the types of benchmark information available in this study are the associated three tables. These show the number of purchase order (PO) payments (Table 1), non-PO payments (Table 2), and T&E payments (Table 3) made per month by A/P staffers at companies in six employment ranges. The tables break down these payments by quartiles, top and bottom deciles, and average. Further, they show the average AT staff size at companies in all employment ranges.
What the Benchmarks Show
These benchmarks reveal that staff productivity still ranges widely at similar sized companies. At companies with 250 to 499 employees, for example, the median number of POs an A/P staffer processes each month is 832. This means that an A/P clerk at a...
