Beethoven's 32 Piano Sonatas: A Handbook for Performers, by Stewart Gordon. Oxford University Press, 2016. http://global.oup.com; 288 pp., $27.95.
Stewart Gordon edited Beethoven's piano sonatas in 2010 (Van Nuys, CA: Alfred). At the request of a colleague and friend, he decided to write another book that would give additional infor-mation and observations about those sonatas. Beethoven 's 32 Piano Sonatas: A Handbook for Performers is a superb reference source for performers, piano teachers and serious piano students.
The book has two sections. The first part, Considerations, includes five chapters: "Sources," "Beethoven and the Piano," "Performance Practices," "Beethoven's Expressive Legacy" and "The Windmills of Beethoven's Mind." The second part is historical information on each sonata, noting distinguishing characteristics and descriptive analyses.
