The shelves of the Carnegie Library in Ames are filled with books on many topics, including architecture, construction and engineering. But one text you won't find in the history section is on the 90-year-old Iowa company that was responsible for the overall appearance of this public library.
It was almost 15 years ago when FEH Associates joined forces with Engberg Anderson to design a 30,000-square-foot addition to the library In accomplishing its goal of maintaining the integrity of the structure, built in 1906, FEH entered a new field - library design.
That project catapulted the local architectural firm into becoming one of few public library designers in Iowa and the Midwest. Since the completion of the Ames project, FEH Associates now has built its portfolio to include 20 public libraries from the Mississippi River to the Missouri River and such out-of-state projects as the Mount Marty College Learning Resource Center in Yankton, S.D., and the South Sioux City, Neb., public library.
These efforts aren't only enlightening the lives of those in the libraries' communities, but providing a significant amount of confidence and self-worth to the 27 architects staffing FEH offices in Des Moines and Sioux City.
