Interior designer Kelli Linnemeyer put down her professional roots in Des Moines' East Village in 1998, years before the neighborhood's revitalization gained momentum. Now an established business, Projects Contemporary Furniture has drawn not only Central Iowa shoppers to the historic district, but also customers from throughout the Midwest who are in search of contemporary furniture by internationally known designers.
"These product lines weren't being offered anywhere else in Iowa," Linnemeyer said.
Before launching Projects, Linnemeyer worked for Pigott Inc., a commercial interiors company in Des Moines. Her work with the company's high-end designer pieces sparked her interest in business ownership.
She opened her showroom at 500 Locust St. following discussions with the building owner, architect Kirk Blunck, about his vision to make the East Village a pedestrian-friendly shopping district.
