PROTIVITI, A PROVIDER of business and technology risk consulting and internal audit services, recently released a set of guidelines aimed at helping organizations comply with section 301 of the U.S. Sarbanes-Oxley Act of 2002. Often called the "whistleblower provision," section 301 calls for companies to have systems in place for receiving and handling confidential reports of questionable accounting or audit practices. However, when the U.S. securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) established rules to meet this requirement, it did not outline specific procedures for doing so.
