Today's (April 3) release of Mediamark Research Inc.'s semiannual "M1" reveals that cumulative readership for the 170 measured magazines dropped 2.9% from last fall and 3.4% from last spring (measuring periods partially overlap). MRI senior vp/research Julian Baim tells min that the loss is "a leveling off rather than a trend, because the numbers are still up from 1993." Still, the data are the first sobering news for magazines in a mostly upbeat 1995, and the ramifications from the paper/ postal hikes and a more sluggish economy (soft retail sales, etc.) suggests that there are more to come.
