The two have been entwined since the Minneapolis-based Utne Reader's 1984 launch, but come March 1, Eric Utne will take a year's sabbatical to "smell the roses worldwide"--lots of traveling, etc. And when he returns in 1997, it will not be in his current capacities as editor- in-chief (for People senior editor Hugh Delehanty is the designated "permanent" successor) or as president (successor not yet announced). Instead, Utne will become chairman of a yet-to-be-formed "board of directors" to "develop new ideas not necessarily related to the magazine." Utne's entrepreneurial bent dates back to the early 1970s, when he helped launch Natural Health and New Age Journal before de- veloping his 309,643 circulation bimonthly namesake, which has made a name for itself as the "Reader's Digest of the alternative press."
