Priced competitively at $4,995, the XL-1 looks like a giant lens with a DV recorder bent onto the back. Although the surface area of the lens is not quite as great as the housing would suggest, the implication that a famous maker of still cameras and 16mm newsgear has entered the broadcast DVcam market is well substantiated.
The lens, for example, which resolves over 600 TV lines. is interchangeable with optionals: a 3X (3.4-10.2mm) wide angle zoom, a 1.6X extender, and, using the EF Adapter XL, the camera will accept any Canon EF lenses. Compatibility with 35mm still camera lenses on the XL-1 yields incredible quality (you are only using the center portion of the glass) and the difference in size between the 1/3-inch CCD and 35mm film produces a focal length multiple that turns a 300mm EOS lens into a super-telephoto 2,160mm video lens. Unlike the Sony DCRVX1000, the XL-1 provides professional quality zoom control using the traditional right-hand button or the innovative lefthand zoom ring control.
Firewire Proven
TELEVISION BROADCAST tested the XLI's two-way Firewire functions using the DPS Spark Plus card in an Intergraph 450 tower. The resolution was excellent and no artifacting was found on either the capture or the re-record back to the camera. Due to copyright restrictions, the XL- is not capable of recording composite or Y/C video.
