Abstract

In addition to the more organic nature of the collection's chapter order, Lofaro provides a table of contents that separates the essays into topical categories: general introduction to the work, its literary and historical antecedents, its cultural contemporaries and progeny, "more views and re-views," and a final coda in which Andrew Crooke travels to and reflects upon a modern sojourn to the real Hobe's Hill. [...]latent utilization illustrates the book's ability to exist not just in its contemporary world but across variegated times and spaces, the American past, present, and future. Because of the book's relevance in multiple contexts, it requires ambitious critical appraisal, and Let Us Now Praise Famous Men at 75: Contemporary readers of Let Us Now Praise Famous Men can often feel much like Crooke in his essay that ends the collection, wandering the rural landscape with seemingly mismatched items in tow: a pinecone, a brick, a wagon handle, a book; however, it is those items, echoing Agee's own catalogue of materials in his exploration of spaces, that connects our historical moment with Agee's and Evans's.
