Globalisation and competition have pushed foundries to improve their efficiency by tapping capacity reserves, but there is often a significant discrepancy between the installed capacity of individual systems and the actual output reached in practice, says German engineering giant ABB.
Frequently, wasted resources are not rooted in the disturbance and downtime of equipment, but rather result from shortcomings in the organisation of production and logistics, the company adds. Planning at workshop level is often insufficiently supported by automated software solutions, and planning errors in the control and handling of production orders continue, claims ABB.
