Deputy Director Federal Air Marshal Service Named
The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) announced the selection of Michael R. Novak as Deputy Assistant Administrator/Deputy Director for the Office of Law Enforcement/Federal Air Marshal Service (OLE/FAMS). Novak joined the Federal Air Marshal Service in October 2003. Prior to joining the Federal Air Marshal Service, Novak served for over 20 years with the U.S. Secret Service.
Rule to Achieve Air Cargo Screening Mandate
The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has issued an Interim Final Rule (IFR) implementing the Certified Cargo Screening Program (CCSP) - a system TSA will use to fulfill air cargo security requirements. It mandates screening of 50 percent of cargo transported on passenger aircraft by February 2009 and 100 percent by August 2010.
"We developed a common-sense solution that will greatly enhance air cargo security by using valuable data from pilot programs and engaging thousands of stakeholders," said TSA Assistant Administrator John Sammon. CCSP has operated as a pilot program since February 2009, assisting aircraft operators in meeting the 50 percent screening milestone and allowing entities in the air cargo supply chain to screen cargo offsite and transport it to the airport securely without the need for rescreening. Aircraft operators must verify that the chain of custody is intact upon acceptance of screened cargo from a CCSP participant.
