PROCEEDINGS OF THE 2002 HARRIET MARTINEAU SOCIOLOGICAL SOCIETY BICENTENNIAL SEMINAR
The second Harriet Martineau Sociological Society Working Seminar convened in Ambleside, United Kingdom, in the heart of the English Lake District,1 during the Bicentennial year of Harriet Martineau's birth. My fellow seminar participants assembled for lively sessions in the large living room of Sunnydeyne, one of the stone Cottages on The Green, May 28-30, 2002. We were warmly welcomed to Ambleside by our hosts, Fiona and Bryan Sparrow, of the adjacent Haven. Together, the participants explored the byways of Ambleside, walked in Martineau's footsteps, read and discussed scholarly papers, presented a public colloquium at St. Martin' s College, examined the Martineau exhibits at the Armitt Library and Museum, dined together at Sheila's Cottage, and drank toasts to Harriet's outstanding sociological accomplishments.
