The high-speed turboprop Saab 2000 has finally found a home with a scheduled carrier in North America, but it came too late to save the aircraft from extinction. Startup Pro Air announced last week it was launching a regional airline unit - Pro Air Express - to feed flights into its Detroit City Airport hub with three of the aircraft. The best part for Pro Air? The aircraft are free - with a few strings.
Pro Air Express will take over three Saab 2000s currently operated as a corporate shuttle by General Motors (GM). GM is giving Pro Air a free lease on the Saab 2000s in exchange for free flights for its employees and a share in the revenues made on the routes eventually chosen by Pro Air.
