Communiqué is a publication of the National Association of School Psychologists (NASP) that supports the association's vision of all children thriving in school, at home, and in life and its mission to “empower school psychologists by advancing effective practices to improve students' learning, behavior, and mental health” (National Association of School Psychologists, 2012). The primary purpose of Communiqué is to inform NASP members about the activities of the association and to provide concise, authoritative, and up-to-date information about current issues and practices in school psychology. The overarching goal is help practitioners provide the highest quality service to the students, families, and systems that they serve. It accomplishes this by providing information and resources that help readers to implement a comprehensive array of school psychology services as described in the Model for Comprehensive and Integrated School Psychological Services (NASP Practice Model; National Association of School Psychologists, 2010).
Articles published in Communiqué represent the hybrid nature of the publication, which has aspects of both a newspaper and a magazine. As a newspaper, it provides relatively brief reports and news regarding NASP and the profession of school psychology. Regular features of this kind include NASP News, the President's Message and Editor's Note, Viewpoints and Letters to the Editor, Student Connections, Just a Click Away (pieces on technology), IDEA in Practice, Welcoming and Safe Schools, Obituaries, Convention News, Early Career Spotlight, and Book Reviews. As a magazine, it features more lengthy, scholarly articles including literature reviews and descriptions of best practices. These are exemplified by categories such as Research-Based Practice, Pediatric School Psychology, and a variety of professional practice articles on topics such as graduate education, supervision, and legal and ethical issues. A wide variety of advocacy and social justice articles are also a regular part of what Communiqué has to offer.
Communiqué is not a peer-reviewed publication. As with other publications of its kind (e.g., Educational Leadership, Phi Delta Kappan), the editorial staff makes all decisions regarding publication. Editorial practices are described on the NASP website and by Desrochers (2017). Some universities recognize Communiqué articles as counting toward promotion and tenure; others do not. Persinger and Daniels (2011) describe a successful effort to change a university's policy toward accepting such articles.
