Hilson Research Inc. and the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) announced that they have resolved their four-year-old trademark dispute.
Hilson Research Inc. is a testing company based in Kew Gardens, N.Y., that specializes in pre-employment screening and psychological/personality testing for use by human resource and mental health professionals. SHRM is a professional membership organization of more than 54,000 members; the Society's mission is to promote the human resource management profession and the interests of the members of the human resource management profession.
In 1989, SHRM adopted a new logo featuring the letters "HR" and the full SHRM name as part of the organization's name change from the American Society far Personnel Administration.
Hilson Research protested this logo, claiming that it was likely to cause confusion with the Hilson Research "HR" logo used since 1980.
On May 18, 1993, the Trademark Trial and Appeal Board of the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office ruled in favor of Hilson Research that there was a likelihood of confusion...
