Bell Labs has been through many changes since 1967, culminating in its current incarnation as the R&D arm of Lucent Technologies. But from the exterior, at least, Bell's Holmdel Complex looks much as it did 30 years ago: a massive glass box offering reflections of the New Jersey countryside.
Designed by influential architect Eero Saarinen, the facility retains its original configuration: four rectangular structures running eastto-west, each six stories high, linked by a cross-shaped atrium. An addition in 1982 lengthened the building at the east and west ends but did not significantly alter the layout.
