A lot of people with corporate jobs have fantasies of walking away and opening an inn someplace.
Vern and Lee Mettin have actually done it and are doing well at it.
The Captain Standard House has been a fixture on West Main Street in Westbrook since about the Civil War. It was a captain's house first but, over time, it went through a number of changes and names -- the St. Charles I, the Metacomet Inn, and others, Vern Mettin said. In the early 1900s, he noted, a large barn was moved onto the property and became another focal point for the town, the site for meetings and square dances, functioning also as a ballet studio and an antique shop.
It's still a focal point, but it's now a highly rated inn, suited not just for overnight stays but for meetings, dinners and even weddings,
