I get taken to task at times for appearing to be too rosy-eyed, for apparently seeing mostly good things in the small press. There are a couple of good reasons for this. The first is that I tend not to finish stuff that I really don't like. Sure, I could review such things, but I don't see much value in it and I believe I can do more justice simply by not mentioning the stuff. Second, I see myself as sort of a cross between a cheerleader and a consumer advocate. The purpose of this column is to tell you about efforts that I think people should be interested in. Occasionally I'll deal with a mediocre product and I'll try to point out where I see the failings.
All of this is lead-in for the issue of Challenging Destiny that I have sitting in front of me. Let me start out by saying that one of the main reasons I selected this digest-sized mag for review was the fine cover by Chris Whitlow. I also liked the layout, which seemed very clean and promising. A quick scan of the table of contents turned up only one name I am familiar with. Then again, the small press is...
