Lawrence Watt-Evans had attracted quite a following with his Legends of Ethshar series, which began in 1985 as "a series of lighthearted fantasy adventures set in a world where several varieties of magic compete with one another." The series ran eight books plus seven short stories, but when he presented the ninth novel to his publisher, they asked him to shelve it and concentrate on more profitable projects.
