Abstract
A 54-year-old woman with a Heartmate II Left Ventricular Assisted Device due to non-ischemic cardiomyopathy, atrial fibrillation, chronic kidney disease, hypothyroidism and asthma presented to our hospital with altered mental status, nausea, vomiting, and shortness of breath. There are no prospective studies that specifically investigate the toxic dose or serum levels threshold for camphor in humans; conducting such study may not be feasible or ethical. Furthermore, misuse of over-the-counter medications entails a public health concern, and education on the proper use and potential hazards of these products is essential.Conflicts of interest None.Financial disclosures None. pH 7.16 pCO2 44 mm Hg pO2 72 mm Hg HCO3 14 mEq/L Base excess −10 mmol/L Anion gap 18 Creatinine 3.1 mg/dL Aspartate aminotransferase (AST) 97 IU/L Alanine aminotransferase (ALT) 40 IU/L Alkaline phosphatase (ALP) 382 IU/L Table 1 Laboratory results.
