PEOPLE * David Cowperthwaite is director of communications for the Pan-Canadian Public Health Surveillance System project, funded by Canada Health Infoway and managed by the B.C. government. He is on leave from his position as director of health information systems with the N.B. government. * Canada Health Infoway added two members to its clinician advisory team-Dr. Rose Anne Goodine and Carry Cruickshank. Dr. Goodine and Cruickshank will represent Atlantic Canada and pharmacists, respectively. * Fasken Martineau made Gilbert Sharpe a partner in its Health Law practice group in Toronto. Previously, Sharpe was director of the Legal Branch, Ontario Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care. * Hewitt Associates appointed Sarah Beech managing principal of the company's human resources consulting business in Canada. * The Canadian Institute of Health Information (CIHI) has two new vice-presidents: Louise Ogilvie, who takes over corporate services, and JeanMarie Berthelot, who will lead CIHI programs. * KUDOS * Four hea|tncare organizations took home Tommy Douglas Celebration of Medicare Awards recently for excellence. These national awards promote innovation in public healthcare. The winners were: Innovation in Donation Program (Nova Scotia Organ and Tissue Donation Team) for excellence in General Disease Management: Child Protection Coordinating Committee (Janeway Children's Health and Rehabilitation Centre in St. John's, NfId.) for excellence in Mental Health; YHSSA-Great Slave Community Health Clinic (Northwest Territories) for excellence in Primary Care; and Fraser Health/B.C. NurseLine Palliative Care Telenursing program for excellence in Home Care. The event also marked Medicare's 40th anniversary. * The Intensive Ambulatory Care Service (IACS) of the Montreal Children's Hospital won the newly created Rotman Award for Paediatric Home Care Innovation recently. IACS provides alternatives to hospitalization for children with complex illnesses.
