This volume is the first in a new series of individual guides extracted from the vast online Grove Dictionary of Art (www.oxfordartonline.com; RR 1999/162) so that it is more affordable for smaller libraries and individuals. Described in the introduction as “a curated set of articles selected by volume editors from the larger Grove Dictionary of Art […] [to] provide in-depth yet accessible content for anyone interested in the history and study of photography”, it covers the history of photography from the earliest nineteenth century period to the present day.
The first section of the book is arranged by a brief history of the subject, followed by specific histories of areas of the world including Africa and the Middle East, Australasia and Europe. Specific topics such as photojournalism and women and photography come next, followed by a section containing 76 alphabetically arranged biographies of individual photographers, each with a short bibliography...
