ASAHI Kasei Corp may sell its acrylic fibre plant now that it has decided to exit the business, a source close to the company told ACN.
The company currently produces 71 130 tonne/year of acrylic fibre in Fuji city, Shizuoka prefecture, Japan, but plans to shut the plant by end-March 2003.
Two to three Asian companies have expressed interest in the facility, the source said, but he would not disclose their identities.
Thai Acrylic Fibre, the only acrylic fibre producer in Southeast Asia, may be a potential buyer, ACN understands. When contacted by ACN, the company's executive president Deepak Mittal said: 'We would like to look at the asset, but we are waiting for Asahi to approach us.'
