Chateau Pomije Winery & Restaurant grows, makes and sells wines for retail sale at its restaurant and for private label distribution. The restaurant and winery, in rural Dearborn County's New Alsace, Ind., is surrounded by a 55-acre vineyard. Chateau Pomije's wines have won awards in Indiana and nationally.
The restaurant, a converted barn, seats about 200 and is open Tuesday through Sunday. Terry Shumrick, winemaker and general manager, said the restaurant draws mainly from Greater Cincinnati, and also plays host to a growing number of bus tours and private parties.
Most of the wine produced at Chateau Pomije is sold at the restaurant. "We sell every drop we can make," Shumrick said. The only other retail outlet is the Chateau Pomije Cafe and Wine Store in O'Bryonville, owned by Terry's brother, Tim.
The private label segment is a small part of the business, but one that Shumrick hopes...
