OPINION
I WISH TO APPLAUD LT COL KENNINGton's principle-fitness report improvement, Toward Fitness Report Precision, (GAZETTE, Mar 67), but I cannot concur in his method. The subject of performance evaluation or merit rating is a subject of considerable controversy in various professions and occupations. Our current system is not necessarily invalid, but it has sufficient room for improvement to consider a critical reappraisal. It is worthy of high-level committee study at HQMC, including independent and objective thought on the part of experts from both academic and business fields.
Until such time that major improvements could be effected in the form of a revised reporting system, an important but easily effected improvement would be to have Section D prepared in typewritten form in lieu of pen and ink. The fact that all other correspondence is typed rather than handwritten substantiates the efficiency, accuracy, availability of space and speed of typewritten communication.
