It will become apparent quickly that the manner in which this book is being reviewed is not a conventional encapsulation of the story, but rather a description of how the story was told and some of the more significant messages it contains for Marines and other professional men of arms today. The idea, of course, is to entice the reader of this review to read, or re-read, this splendid account.
Col Robert D. Heinl wrote this book 15 years or so after the events he was describing, all of which he lived through in one way or another. Many of the Marines involved were known to him. Therefore, one can expect that his personal feelings and convictions are embedded in every word as he recounts the events that make up the amphibious assault at Inchon and the liberation of Seoul in the fall of 1950.
